In A Time of Gifts, locals are always preparing for some holiday or another... always feasting. St. Sylvester Day instead of NYE... Six days after Christmas is Three Kings Day. People are not just "doing things" but doing things because... and that's a rich treasury of tradition and calendar and story. It's a story of culture in the sense of "this is what we do" rather than what I sense to be a barren and withered life.
Later I note "stunning list of "memorized things" in A Time of Gifts" that kept him company on the road.
