Middle Season #10-2026

 

Wed. April 1

  1. From the train. Wide and deep prairie field of train tracks 

thursday April 2 

  1. Rain alll morning and overnight. Drip from bedroom ceiling overnight
  2. Family room roof adorned with red maple blossoms after the all night rain. 
  3. On the way to Menards. 11:00. A couple bouts of rain. Some intense. Some feathery and insistent. 

Friday April 3

  1. 12:22. Purple hyacinths are now open; almost immediately see a bee emerge from a blossom 
  2. Buds on Korean spice bush getting redder
  3. At Fuller Berg for Cynthia’s across spring
  4. Areas in the prairie swamped into wetlands and South Creek all the way up to the forest preserve
  5. Red Wing blackbirds everywhere. Sounding. Trailing and Lee still wrestling in some trees. Also robins squeak. 
  6. Ground covered Sycamore balls now ramp, tender foot of the path; another tree aka dropped seeds to be stepped on along path. Those aren’t seeds I’ve decided they’re the beginnings of buds that I’ve been knocked down maybe by squirrels maybe by the most recent hailstorm or heavy rains. 
  7. Duck heaven. They’re everywhere I. The swamped forest and prairie. 
  8. Big goose standing on one leg along the shore next to a seated goose
  9. The tall, beige yellow grass is getting thinner and more knocked down in the Prairie area and green is underneath the yellow gold khaki
  10. Emeralds, yellow and white with pink centers, hugging the forest floor in blooming on this windy
  11. Catalpa seed beds also cover the path and our trotting upon
  12. Olympic marathon are named Jeff who recently died who came up with the idea of that run walk marathon, which some countries called Jeffing
  13. Two crows or black birds, calling back-and-forth at the southern end of Fuller Woods, parallel Spring Road where the bushes now or more than just a piece of green but pretty solid green light yellow green. Not full leaves yet. 
  14. You can yet see through the yellow the willow tree, but the frightens are now half filled with yellow catkins and half filled with equal sized light green leaves
  15. A mallard sleeping head tucked back and pulled in emerald head underneath the calls of the Red Wing blackbirds swirling calls twirling calls
  16. Water burbling through culverts from underneath the street from the forest across the street low winding prices through the forest are wet and streaming that I’ve never noticed where streams before
  17. Black goose sized bird in water. Maybe red on head?  Swims mostly underwater. At first I thought its neck and head were periscope.   Cormorant. 
  18. Today’s Merlin: Sparrow house finch Bluejay Mallard dark eyed Junko, black capped, chickadee, and red wing blackbird

Sat. April 4

  1. It’s been raining for the full hour since I got up at five. No thunder or bombast. Just steady rain. 
  2. Peonies suddenly 12-14 inches
  3. First red buds I see on Brainerd I saw them
  4. Beginning leaves of hydrangeas beginning to emerge 
  5. What’s plant from smokies? Azaleas!
  6. Why is my azaleas not happy?

Sunday April 5

  1. 6:49. Sun plays on back wall of house. But now it’s the bricks and parting fireplace mantle that are lit up, not the wall. But this lasts a short time. Then it’s overcast. 
  2. The pear tree behind house has begun to bloom. 
  3. Tulips in back yard showing red at seams. 

Monday April 6

  1. 5:55. I’ve missed the ful moon. Just now the moon partly eroded on right side appears in the small space between window frame and garage roof
  2. Pink magnolias in full bloom
  3. Grass is so much greener now than a week ago
  4. The past full moon falling through the spring rock pines as I ride towards work

Tuesday April 7

  1. Waiting for the moon to appear in my back window. 
  2. At 6:29 the world is awakened and visible but not sunlit. 
  3. SS. Love is not a feeling it’s an ability. Steve carrel movie about being a single dad. 
  4. The sun casting tree shadows gently moving on the de that window window shade. 
  5. Maple blossom get incredibly long. Satellite antennae
  6. Red buds looking pretty just beginning 
  7. Lilacs cones of dusky purple balls getting longer and bigger. 4”?  Preparing

Wednesday

  1. Birds already singing at 5:10 when I get up
  2. 8:29. Sun over the building next to me in my office blinding. 
  3. Maple tree. Tiny red mini helicopters 
  4. Also on a couple branches a fist of tiny leaves 

Thursday April 9

  1. Pine cones everywhere under a tree in spring rock. When did they appear?
  2. Disintegrating bird nest in small tree. Sting out because plastic stands?
  3. Top gun birds chasing each other like f14s
  4. A duck perched 30’ up in tree after flying across sky and overhead
  5. Redbuds getting dusky. Colored pencil hatchings. 
  6. There’s a small moth on the window by the back door. 
  7. The red tulips are fully formed in the back. Not yet open. 

Friday. April 10

  1. Cherry trees blooming. On my walk at lunch. 
  2. BTW in mist. The RWB at school don’t mind the mist. 
  3. That tree that’s fallen down in the storm looking dead. It has red buds on it.
  4. Frogs I hear 
  5. Grass facing the south over near the flooded area and back by the church 10 inches high
  6. A beaver?  Something swimming low in the water. Towards that downed tree
  7. Virginia bluebells clutching their light pink blooms, ready to open soon
  8. Chives growing up across the floor
  9. Trout lily leaves, pushing up puff near chives
  10. A big patch of Siberian squills all blooming purple with yellow daffodils, growing in around them blooming and also some thicker spears coming up amidst them very green just a small rectangular patch
  11. First couple May apples, just the distinctive, dusty, green foliage emerging
  12. A yard is a place you can ho into. Go into, spend time in, not perfect or show off, a pleasant place to spend time and get your hands full of earth. Also interesting things grow. Some things you can eat. A library, a room. One of many places to be at home
