I loved this funny Outside article, "My Path to Become Semi-Rad," by Brendan Leonard It's his attempt to answer the question of how he "found his voice" as a writer.
It's an old idea, but it's in the form of short (instagrammy/Twittery) moments in a "marker" font.
The best part is that almost every one of the "moments" has an illustration or photo with it, often with a markered commentary on it (pictures of his high school writing, snapshots of an inspiring teacher, images of rejection letters, etc.)
The heart of his development was his decision to do a daily blog about a bike trip he took with a friend. That blog led him to create a stand alone blog "Semi-Rad" "where I could put all the writing that I couldn't get published. He began posting regularly ("I figured I'd write one post every week until something happened or until I got sick of it.")
I wrote about things that I thought were funny, having fun with (and poking fun at) the unique/strange ways that we, as climbers, skiers, hikers, and cyclists see the world. I wrote satirical "how-to" pieces, fake "gear reviews," but also so real essays about my experiences. I was trying to figure out what worked.
The message is pretty similar to Austin Kleon's -- do what you love, do it a little bit each day.
