I'm listening to Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr. One young character seems to be very sensitive; his teacher diagnoses autism spectrum. He finds relief first in the forest, and in a guiding spirit of a Great Gray Owl, and to ear defender headphones. The character escapes to the forests every day after school and sees the owl every third day or so.
There is magic in this place, the owl seems to say. You just have to sit and breathe and wait and it will find you. He sits and breathes and waits and the Earth travels another thousand kilometers along its orbit. Lifelong knots deep inside the boy loosen.
AnHere is a photo of Middle Two Medicine Lake and Mt. Sinopah in the background. Glacier National Park is a place where "knots deep inside the boy loosen" for me.
