Work you love*

In 2016 I was reading a Seth Godin book.  I began a list of "heroes" and a list of "work you love."  I listed only Errol Morris for heroes (!!) and for "work you love":  Thelonius Monk, Apples in Stereo, Superchunk.

4 Cardinal Virtues*

Cicero said gratitude is not only the greatest of all virtues, but the parent of all others. I asked Claude what he thought the other virtues Cicero considered.

Cicero worked within the classical framework of four cardinal virtues, which he wrote about extensively (especially in De Officiis):

• Wisdom (prudentia) – the pursuit of truth and sound judgment

• Justice (iustitia) – giving each person their due, honoring fairness and the social bonds between people

• Courage (fortitudo) – greatness of spirit, facing hardship or danger rightly

• Temperance (temperantia) – self-control, moderation, and a sense of propriety

Beyond these four, Cicero also prized things like pietas (duty to family, country, and gods), fides (good faith, keeping one's word), and humanitas (a cultivated, humane character). Gratitude fit into this picture as an extension of justice — repaying what is owed to those who've helped you — which is likely why he elevated it so highly, calling it the root from which the others grow.
