Three ideas from October 2016 Journal
Waiting for Motivation*
Jocko (Wilineck?) at the end of the podcast talks about motivation and discipline - says the first is fickle, the second is what matters -- you need to be able to force yourself to do the hard things - write the book, paint, lift weights.. whatever... You can't afford to wait for motivation to strike. And when you write, even if it's 100 words of crap, maybe there are fifty that are on the way to your goal. Also talk about his way of constantly assesing the problem, identifying the goal -- and puttinga plan into action without worrying over theplan too much, take action, reflection, take action.
At the end of the journal, I write: my blog goal is to create 100 posts in the remaining days of 2016. Each post will contain a nugget of thought about teaching/learning. It may be that I change my mind later, but I want to think hard thoughts. They should be problem-based. They will all be first-person based. I'd like to borrow Larry Ferlazzo's idea of collecing relates reaons/ ideas in a single post that I can go back to.
Autonomous, Competent, Community*
Reading Sebastian Junger's Tribe; it tackles the need - especially among boys an dmen - to feel necessary. References research on how we all need to feel autonomous, competent, and community.
Give it Away*
Seth Godin (in a book I read recently) said that creative people need to give their work away as gifts. It puts you in a different relationship with others - you're not a negotiator or a taker, or a scavenger, or a freeloader.
