I went for a walk by myself yesterday afternoon approaching dusk. I saw the moon - a bright scimitar, very thin, facing the setting sun.
It should look like this every 15th day of the moon cycle. And it should be at the same place in the sky (b/c that's why it looks like it does, following (or preceding) the sun at that distance.)
The new moon was Sunday (it was Monday yesterday). So, it's a waxing gibbous moon. It grows by 7% each day.
