I have great appreciation for these razor-sharp phrases: pathetic subservience, soiled but benevolent, meanness disguised as concern, amused contempt
At first glance, "The Master" is another of Anderson's group films: lost people gather around a charismatic leader. But, if "Boogie Nights" offered a soiled but benevolent family, this group-wife, children, followers, hangers-on—is held together by pathetic subservience and a meanness disguised as concern. Grave as most of it is, the Movie is animated by amused contempt.
