Lady's Slipper*
From NY Botanical Gardens link
The Orchid Show: Thailand features a genus of lady’s slipper orchids native to Eastern Asia known as Paphiopedilum. The Latin name has a beautiful background story relating to the birth of Aphrodite, goddess of love, beauty, and fertility.
According to ancient Greek myth, Aphrodite was born out of the sea, and landed at the site of Paphos on the island of Cyprus. A great temple was built in her honor at Paphos (and ruins remain there today). This orchid’s shape and beauty would have made it a suitable slipper for the goddess of love; hence it was named Paphiopedilum (Paphio- for the city of Paphos, –pedilum from the Ancient Greek word pedilon, meaning slipper).
Cathedral Thinking*
In a Talk of the Town article in the NYer (June 1, 2026), Anna Russell writes about an art installation by Christo, overseen by his nephew Vladimir Yavachev. One sentence I like: "Christo and Jeanne-Claude travelled the world wrapping things: cars, islands, the Sydney coastline. 'The enthusiasm was incredible,' Yavachev said."
My favorite part:
'Jeanne-Claude always used to say we do these projects for ourselves, and if other people enjoy it, that's a bonus,' he went on. Many of the works were dreamed up decades before they became reality. 'The projects find their time,' he said. He recalled a phrase he had learnedf from Bono, n the roof of the Arc de Triomphe. 'Cathedral thinking,' he said. 'Cathedral thinking i when you start something that you know that you cannote finish. Any architect of a cathedral, it wil take tow hundred years to finish a cathedral! You're never going to see it. It's very similar.'"
Updated Weekly Blog Schedule*
I could add a new day to my "weekly" blog schedule. Currently it's MS on day 10 (20, 30), poem on 11, a series of questions answered (with Claude?), each with a hashtag, on 12, three short itmes on 13, 3x10 review on 9. That leaves 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. One day per week can be "grateful" for the week: a monumnet to goodness, love, positiivity.... each day, I can try to list 10 items in my journal: "praise for..." or "more of this, please!"
